Hybrid and Electric vehicles or EV’s are rapidly increasing in numbers on Australian roads and it is expected that the number of models available to choose from will increase as technology and infrastructure develops.
An electric vehicle is lower maintenance than an internal combustion engine but still needs to be serviced just as often as any other vehicle.
Electric vehicles hold high voltages and specific PPE, special insulated tools and training are required to service them safely due to the risk of electrical shock.
Hybrid vehicles require both standard and special maintenance services to be kept in peak performance. Traditional service items like brakes, cabin air filters, shock absorbers and fluids should all be monitored on a regular basis, as well as steering and suspension systems. Spark plugs, tires, wiper blades, lights, air and fuel filters must be regularly checked and replaced as necessary. Fewer electric motor components need to be serviced according to the vehicle's schedule. The 12-volt battery must also be assessed and changed as needed for optimal operation.
Just like with any modern vehicle, you need to choose the right workshop with qualified, trained technicians who have access to up to the minute diagnostic information and the right equipment and quality parts to service your EV.

How often does my electric car need to be serviced?
An electric motor can last 15 to 20 years if used in normal conditions. But, with external components such as dirt, temperature changes and movement, it's important to service your car regularly to ensure that it’s safe and reliable.
What does an electric vehicle service include?
Most services will include regular vehicle checks such as brakes, cabin air filters, shock absorbers, essential fluids e.g brake fluid and coolant, windscreen wiper blades, tyres and lights.
The EV battery is also an importance part and should be regularly checked and replaced as needed.
What sort of battery does my electric car need?
This is dependant on the vehicle make and model. It is important that extreme caution should be excerised around these battery systems as they are complex and require specialist PPE and qualified technicians to complete.
What is regenerative braking?
Regenerative braking is where your EV’s kinetic energy is converted to electrical energy during braking and stored in the batteries.
